VMware Fusion & Workstation Are Now Free: What This Means for Users

By bedigital on November 14th, 2024

A year on from Broadcom’s acquisition of VMware, the global software supplier announced on 11th November 2024 that previously chargeable VMware Fusion and Workstation products, will be provided free for both personal and commercial use.

This change is particularly significant given VMware’s recent transition from perpetual licenses to a subscription-based model, which ultimately resulted in increased costs for customers across the board.

While this news may seem positive, it’s important to consider its complexities. Whether you’re on a subscription model or a legacy perpetual license, we’ve outlined key changes and their potential impact on your business.

VMware Fusion and Workstation is free for all users

Whatever VMware license you currently hold, all VMware customers can now access VMware Fusion and VMware Workstation, previously chargeable products, for no cost at all.

Customers with existing subscriptions or tied into legacy contracts may still need to make payments, while new customers can now access these products for free.

Support for Fusion and Workstation has been axed

As a consequence of both products being freely accessible, support ticketing for troubleshooting will no longer be available.

Broadcom honour the contracts for customers who are already paying for these licenses and offer support until those contracts end. Though, if you’re a new user and require support relating to either product, articles and forums are now the only solution offered by VMware.

How to leverage this change

Ultimately, this shift to free access represents a significant opportunity for VMware customers. Not only do users now have tools they need for desktop virtualisation without the added expense of licensing fees, but it gives pre-existing subscription holders an opportunity to renegotiate their current contract in order to account for this cost reduction.

To maximise the value of your VMware solutions, both current and prospective customers should stay informed about Broadcom’s evolving approach.

At bedigital, we can help provide clarity on the impact of any changes and maximise your VMWare investment as well as your entire license estate. Get in touch with one of our licensing experts today to find out more.
