Large Utilities Organisation

Assessing ITAM maturity to support a complex divestiture and new operating model

Opportunities to generate savings by proactively managing contracts

Clear comms between business areas relating to IT assets

Better data management to enable clearer visibility of IT assets

Introduction

One of the UK’s largest utility companies underwent a divestiture, requiring a maturity assessment for the divested entity to integrate IT Asset Management (ITAM) into its new owner’s business model. This case study outlines how bedigital provided a comprehensive solution to address the unique challenges of this transition.

Their Challenges

The divested business faced significant ITAM challenges due to key IT functions, including ITAM, remaining with the original company as a managed service. This created a dependency on the original company for ITAM data and services during a three-year transition period. The divested business lacked internal ITAM capability, leading to:

  • Increased stakeholder involvement in end-to-end ITAM processes across both business entities
  • Extensive documentation review with limited opportunities to influence existing processes and systems
  • Reliance on the original company for asset data and services until full integration with the new owner
  • Complex coordination between multiple IT process owners and asset management functions

Their Objectives

The primary objective was to ensure a smooth transition of ITAM for the divested business. Specifically, the client sought to:

  • Undertake a full review of the ITAM service provided by the original owner during the transitional period
  • Assess how the divested business’s IT process owners interacted with IT asset processes and policies
  • Benchmark current ITAM practices and identify areas for improvement
  • Develop actionable insights and recommendations for ITAM governance, data management, lifecycle management, and functional management
  • Design an operating model to enable the business to achieve its ITAM goals
  • Establish immediate priorities and a roadmap for improving IT asset visibility and control within the new business model

How bedigital delivered

bedigital was selected by the divested business to undertake a full review of the ITAM service that was being provided to them through the transitional period by its original owner and the way its own IT process owners interacted with IT asset processes and policies.

Each stage followed a structured process:

  • Stakeholder Engagement and Documentation Review: We conducted extensive interviews with key stakeholders across both business units. Concurrently, we meticulously reviewed all current strategy, policy, and process documentation.
  • Data Analysis: A critical component of our assessment involved a detailed review of all available ITAM data. This analysis allowed us to build a full picture of how everything was being done at that time, so we could benchmark it and provide actionable insights on how to improve things.
  • Strategic Recommendations: Once completed, we drew up a list of 25 recommendations for the customer to consider across key areas of IT asset management –governance, data management, lifecycle management and functional management – whilst also designing an operating model to enable the business to progress towards its ITAM goals

Conclusion

Through bedigital’s expert assessment and strategic guidance, we enabled the customer to set immediate priorities and build a roadmap of improvement to gain visibility and control of their IT assets as they moved towards a new business model.
