DMSG were privileged to be a part of Wales National Coding Challenge for 7 to 11 year olds run by the DVLA, and in association with Code Club and the STEM Ambassador Hub Wales. More than 200 children from schools across Wales, were challenged to build a game using SCRATCH under one of 4 themes, all with important moral messages;
– Anti-bullying
– Road safety awareness
– Pollution in oceans
– Safe cycling
The challenge enabled pupils to develop their problem solving, communication and teamwork skills as well as improving their knowledge of computer programming in a fun and innovative way. The top five shortlisted schools were then given the opportunity to present their game to the audience and the panel of judges; Oliver Morley (DVLA CEO), Professor Faron Moller (Head of Computer Science at Swansea University), Rob Stewart (Leader of Swansea Council) and Sian Ashton (STEM Ambassador Co-coordinator for Wales).
The event was held at the RLDC in Swansea, hosted by BBC Presenter, Lucy Owen and joined by the four police forces in Wales, the fire service and the British Army, all providing fun activities throughout the day.
